We are pleased to announce Project of the Year from the Local Initiatives Contribution Fund from Patricia Area Community Endeavours. Brad Woodworth from The Northwest Ontario Windsurfing club (NOW) accepts the award from Community Development Committee Chair Bryan Brown.

NOW started 5 years ago out of the growing demand of area residents asking for windsurfing lessons. The club has approximately 40 members to date and holds lessons every Sunday at Sandy Beach Park in Dryden from June through until September. The club is in partnership with the City of Dryden for use of the park during club activities. Members are mostly from the area including Sioux Lookout, Ignace, Vermilion Bay, Dryden and even as far away as Thunder Bay!

The trailer project had come about due to the growing amount of windsurfing equipment the club was getting, and the need to store the gear in a safe and secure environment. Having a trailer would also allow the club to “take the show on the road” so to speak to the surrounding communities.

The club holds an annual event called the ‘Moose Regatta’ with competitors coming from all over the Midwest USA and central Canada. Now in its 7th year, the windsurfing club will be host to The Canadian Masters Windsurfing Championship August 6-8, 2010 on Wabigoon Lake. This national level event is testament to the dedicated hard work of the areas windsurfing community. NOW have confirmed competitors coming from Wisconsin, Minnesota, Illinois, Ohio, Nebraska, California, Quebec, Ontario, Manitoba, Saskatchewan, Alberta, British Columbia and as far away as Sweden! What a wonderful opportunity the region has to showcase all it has to offer! 2010 will see the club bring windsurfing to Sioux Lookout during the Blueberry Festival, Ignace again at the end of June, Eagle Lake hopefully one day during the Pow-Wow week, and a trip north to Ear Falls and Red Lake on a yet to be determined weekend.

The Local Initiatives Contribution Fund (LIF) can provide up to $5,000 for your research, project or event (and more) if it proves to better the community. We are busy getting prepared for the 2010 Canadian Windsurfing Championship right here in Dryden Ontario on Wabigoon Lake. Above is the artwork for billboards that will be displayed east and west of the city. The championship event will run from Aug 6-9 with parties planned for every night! We hope to attract up to 100 competitors making it one of Canada’s largest attended windsurfing events in decades. We just need you to come and attend. the photo gallery has been updated with pics from 2009 so be sure to check it out. Lots of fun on and off the water with the club so far this season. Even though the weather has been below seasonal and the water still a bit cool, it hasn’t dampened our energy for getting out on the water!

Saturday August 15, the club will be travelling to Agimac Beach in Ignace, Ontario to give lessons from 11-4. If you’re interested in a bit of a road trip, email me to check for seat availability.

Well lots has happened since our early registration night! The club are now owners of a 7′x14′ enclosed trailer to keep our gear stored safe & secure from the elements. This trailer purchase was made possible with a Local Inititives Fund Grant from Patricia Community Endevours (PACE) and generous sponsors to our club like Dryden Municipal Telephone (DMTS), Link Signs, Evergreen Memories and the volounteer hours from our club members. A huge thank-you to all who made this possible for our growing windsurfing club!!

Speaking of which, our club activities this summer at our Sunday at Sandy Beach program has been a hit so far! We’ve had quite a few people waiting at the beach to get out on the water to give windsurfing a try. Nice to see 20 sails out at times. Lets us know in a small way that we are spreading the good vibe windsurfing has to offer. Anyone from 7 years to 70 years old can do it!

If you are a youth (13-14 years old in 2008) that enjoys windsurfing
and are willing to train, you could be chosen as Canada’s boy and girl
to represent Canada at the new 2010 Youth Olympics (for age 15 and 16) in 2010 in Singapore. This event will happen every 4 years (again in 2014).
